Allum, Percy 0295-2319 PERSEE Program Sociology and Political Science http://dx.doi.org/10.3406/polix.1995.2058 <jats:p>The Double Face of the Christian Democrat Party. </jats:p> <jats:p>Percy Allum [24-44].</jats:p> <jats:p>This article discusses the organization of the Christian Democrat Party and its local power system in North and South Italy. Its main thesis is that for a series of historical and socio-economic reasons, it was constituted two types of party (a party of notables in the South and a mass party in the North), held together ideologically by a generic anti-Communism. Moreover, as a result of a succession of crucual developments (Fanfani's party reorganization inl950s; Vatican II in 1960s), it was converted into a « syndicate of political machines » covering the whole country. The second part of the article documents, on the basis of empirical material coming from two extreme, but opposing, cases (Naples and Vicenza), the various mechanisms employed in the two periods (1950/60s and 1970/80s) to ensure the party's power.</jats:p> Le double visage de la Démocratie chrétienne Politix |
